My idea changed after the start of the 4th week as I felt that my skills are better demonstrated when I focus on them more.
Our old idea as a group of two was to make a 4 track ep with both group members making an original track with my one being make out of samples from around the house and then we would switch tracks an i would remix the group members track and they would do the same with my track making a 4 track EP.
But after 4 weeks I found myself really enjoying the process of making instruments with me looking more into the advanced ways for making the Sampled instruments sound different and unique so I changed up what I was doing for my FMP (final major project).
So for my new idea for my FMP I will be making an Ableton instrument pack and a 3 track EP with my group member with them using my instrument pack to remix there track they made and with my remixing there track with built in Ableton instruments and then mastering the tracks as a group ready for release on streaming platforms.

In the 20th Century, the term EP stands for Extended Play Record. It was a type of vinyl record that was played at a different speed than the standard records but in the 21st Century it means Extended Play (SP) witch is a short version of an album and these are usually use as i starting point for a content creator that my not have the money or resources to makes a full album (LP). They are also used by large producers as a free promotion material to bring new people into their music driving in the sails up of their full albums. (Jon Skinner, 2018)
I wanted to do the research about EP’s to get the correct understanding of what is required for an EP and I will be doing a two track EP with an instrument pack and an instrument Demo.
Musique concrète The term musique concrète is French for “concrete music” which is a technique of composing using record raw materials. Musique concrète is the act of assembling various natural sounds that were recorded. The technique was developed by the French composer Pierre Schaefferin in 1948 in his experimental studio. When Pierre Schaeffer first started using this technique he would record and arrange all the audio on tape witch would take many days making it a very time consuming process but with modern technology we can record our sounds to a digital format and then cut, edit and add effects the sounds in a DAW (digital audio workstation) (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2018)
For my FMP I will be using the principles of sampling RAW objects around the house and using the samples in my instruments.
When talking about different types of microphones, I have to take into account what I am going to be using them for, so I'll be after a mic that is quick and portable that offers a high quality recording so that I can record a 2 track stereo of anything. I found that probably the best way of grabbing recordings quickly while being portable would be a Handheld field recorder as they run on batteries and capture using its X/Y set of microphones two track stereo. The XY recording method allows the records like the Zoom H1 to be able to capture in a large area with its wide angles of pickup due to its stereo cardioid polapatten with its overlapping phasing pairs that can be seen in the photo on your left. But with the recorder recording to an SD card I would have think about the bit depth and sample rate of the device for this I would went with 48khz 24bit as the 48khz allows for a high quality that can be found mostly in film and tv but can be uploaded easily to streaming sites and 24 bits as it allows for lots of head room while editing as the recorder will be taking date points a lot more often allowing for time stretching and noise reduction making the edit a lot quicker. A digital audio workstation also known as DAW is a piece of audio software that contains instruments like strings, drums and synthesisers that you play using midi using a midi device such as a keyboard. Or recording using an audio source such as a microphone or external instrument that userlery gets converted from analog audio to digital using an audio interface.
In a DAW you can record, edit, compose, loop, mix, master any digital audio and the DAW allows you to build tracks using audio across multiple tracks. (Brook-Jones, 2021) When producing my FMP i will using the DAW Ableton as it allows you to make your own your own instruments and pack then for sale to the community and when mixing and mastering the EP tracks i will using Pro tools as it has the best workflow for using plugins.
I found my inspiration from these videos on YouTube from Andrew Huang and they fascinated me which gave me the idea to use 100% samples for my FMP making instruments out of effects just like Andrew Huang dose in the video that inspired me
In the video on your left (HUANG, 2022) uses Samples from a Bottle of soap to make a whole song and I thought that I would take this inspiration and use sampled objects from my house instead while following the same principles he used in his two videos of his (“Making a beat with soap” and “making a beat with baby sounds”). The GM drum Standard is used when we use MIDI to trigger different drum patches; these can be Samples or synthesisers. When connecting a drum machine or MIDI interface for drums we usually use MIDI channel 10 as most software know to treat the layout of the midi page as drum names and not key names. In Ableton's you can use a Midi input on channel 10 to trigger any of the instruments or samples in the drum rack. I want to keep to the standard that most people are using when making my drum rack so people are familiar with what sound is where and so you don't have to remap a midi drum kit
When I got underway making the Instrument pack and remix and I decided the best way to document my progress would be in blog posts as I could type up what I did after every day and show progress throughout the project.
For me the instrument pack was a fun experience that helped me learn more about the built in plugins in Ableton and how you can make your own instruments and sell them to others for use in their projects. I also really enjoyed going around sampling objects around round the house using a field recorder and a pair of headphones to listen to what I was recording
I feel that a could have made lots more instruments if I had the time and made the quality of the current instruments better with more time, if I had reached out to Ableton earlier with the issues I was having with making the instrument pack I could have mabby resolved the issue adding instruments to the user library or lacks section and not having to rely on a saved project to transport the instruments
When listening to Lydia track I really enjoy what she has done and i think that the quieter master i did makes the track keep its relaxed feel
To me the remix worked out fine in the end but with the struggles of getting the instruments to work in a new live set was a struggle and with very little time at the end to produce this remix it feels slightly like a copy with different sound of Lydia Sharply Dressed track.
When analysing the project on the plan i found that the time scale i had to complete the task wasn't long enough as I feel like I didn't reach the number of instruments i first intended in making and i would have had made an extra two instruments if i didn't change my plans from a 4 track ep but at the same time i am glad that i spent the little time rethinking as i feel this task has made me learn a lot more electronic instruments and how they are produced an used in day to day environment in our tracks. I think that spending a week on collecting/recording samples with a great idea and I really enjoyed this aspect of the new and old plans and if I and if I was doing this in a commercial environment i would have just collected/recorded samples and then cut them up and produced instruments out of them making the hole job and time scale be making the Ableton pack but too stick parsherly with the original plan and the collaborative aspect i felt i should also add to the group EP with the Remix made out of my instruments to tie it all together. Overall I think I completed all the steps on my New plan just not always to the times I set to do tasks and overall proceed I instrument Pack that has interesting instruments that i can see myself and others using in the future in projects. And for the EP I think that the two tracks work well together even though they are built out of the same midi notation. If i had managed my time better i would have left myself a week to get some promotion out there helping growth of the music and instruments and getting some peer feedback from music minded people and just general listeners.
